Instead of Another Conference

Come to our July 11 webinar “Using Electric Vehicles to Enhance Building Resilience”

Happy summer! I actually love conferences. Like many of you, I went to one this past month — in my case, Oregon Pupil Transportation Association (OPTA). And I’ll be seeing many of you next month at School Transportation News (STN) Expo Reno + Green Bus Summit, July 12-17.

But I’m writing briefly today to suggest a way to learn about cutting-edge technology without any travel or expenses. This webinar’s topic is related to my TEDx talk “Electric School Buses Improve People’s Lives”, but with more technical content and less dramatic storytelling.

Webinar: Using Electric Vehicles to Enhance Building Resilience
Wed. July 10, noon Pacific

Presented by the MOVER project / New Buildings Institute

MOVER = Microgrid Opportunities: Vehicles Enhancing Resilience.

Background: as vehicles electrify, they create opportunities for increased building resilience within our communities. Electric buses and vehicles can use emerging charger technologies to send the power in their batteries as backup energy into buildings during significant grid, weather, fire, or seismic events.

This webinar will look at early demonstration projects that are pairing transit and school buses with solar energy and battery storage to form functioning microgrids that can provide emergency services to communities when needed. We’ll hear from panelists on the front lines working to create these microgrids. We’ll look at the challenges and lessons learned from some of the first pilot projects in the country. Join us on July 10th as we look at the exciting potential for vehicles to power buildings in emergency scenarios.

I’m Alison Wiley here in Oregon, an ESB and equity geek, and a partner in the MOVER project. I’ve worked in low-carbon transportation since 2006, focusing on electric buses since 2016. Find my Electric School Bus website here. I help school bus fleets move forward with electrifying, by writing this newsletter and as a consultant and grant writer (I recently helped to land a $20m project). This newsletter is a member of the nationwide, equity-focused Alliance For Electric School BusesPlease reply with comments or topics you’d like to see me cover.

Coming Up Fast

Wed. July 10, 10 a.m. Electric School Bus Meeting for the Pacific Northwest (EPA Region 10). If you’re not yet invited, reply to this email or contact Craig Beaver of Beaverton School District or Dani Shannon of EPA Region 10. Recurring on second Wednesdays.

STN’s Industry Calendar contains dates of many states’ school bus conferences.

Green Transportation Summit and Expo, August 20-22, 2024, Tacoma, Washington. Presented by Columbia-Willamette Clean Cities Coalition, which like me, is a partner in the MOVER project.

Zero Emissions Bus Conference, August 27-29, 2024, Philadelphia, PA. Presented by Center For Transportation and the Environment. Several free and discounted passes available for school bus fleets.
